Primary Care Expansion
Guidon provided Architecture and Engineering services for the renovation and expansion of the primary care clinic at the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center. Design included an addition to the existing building and renovation to the existing primary care suite. The design aligned the clinic with the VA PACT model and collocated 12 existing teamlets. The Renovate and Expand Primary Care project began design while construction was ongoing for a central sterile processing unit at the lower level. This lower level project was a building addition; the Expand Primary Care project would be built directly above the established footprint. Specific phasing was coordinated to provide construction infection control planning and to relocate existing building systems from the roof to the basement of the expansion.
In addition to challenges posed by coordination with the lower level construction, Guidon also had to incorporate structural provisions for future expansion plans. The structural, mechanical, and plumbing designs were engineered to accommodate the future addition of four more stories, including a radiology suite planned for the second floor, and surgery suite on the third floor. Building systems have been engineered for energy efficiency in compliance with ASHREA 90.1 – 2010 and Green Globes criteria. Extra effort was taken to align the design of building systems to the master plan for expanding this portion of the campus. The new system design ties into the existing campus control system.
Guidon carefully planned an exterior design that will create a seamless transition between the floors as they are constructed. The building finishes were designed to match the existing vocabulary of the building while incorporating modern design elements. The interior space was designed considering VA Design Guidelines and to match the existing Primary Care suite. The $7.4M Expand Primary Care project also created a new patient entrance to the clinic, including the parking area, drop off and canopy, and landscaping.
