Community Justice Campus Parking Garages
Intentional and strategic design choices shaped the two parking garages at the Community Justice Campus. As the project’s structural engineer and functional layout architect, Guidon navigated various complexities throughout design and construction. The first garage, situated between the Justice Center and the Jail, provides 300 spaces for judges and other judicial employees. The second, a seven-level structure near the main road, accommodates up to 1,300 vehicles for visitors and professionals working on campus.
Situated on a brownfield site on Southeastern Ave, just southeast of downtown Indianapolis, the garages required a specialized foundation and flooring system due to existing ground contamination. These challenges, along with material constraints, necessitated adjustments to the foundation design and concrete pouring process.
Security was another key concern. The employee garage, located between the Justice Center and the Jail, was designed with strict safety measures, including access control systems, surveillance, a secured perimeter, and fencing. A covered top floor further enhanced protection.
Both garages feature post-tension concrete, offering durability, reduced water intrusion, and resistance to salt damage. The open layout, higher ceilings, and improved visibility create a safer and more welcoming environment for employees and visitors.
Beyond functionality, the garages were designed to seamlessly integrate into the cityscape, avoiding the typical gray concrete block aesthetic. Despite challenges, they successfully meet and exceed the City’s goals, providing a long-lasting and resourceful parking solution for a busy campus.
