Behavioral Health Expansion
The expansion of the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center was focused on more than increasing services for those seeking outpatient behavioral health. The project sought to improve both the client experience and correct HIPAA-related deficiencies, placing comfort and privacy at the forefront of the design.
Recognizing the need for clear wayfinding, the new design identified paths to waiting areas and treatment spaces, preventing unauthorized access to private information. To maintain confidentiality of personal health information, a new, private check-in area was designed to maintain separation from the waiting area.
Designing an expansion brought the challenge of re-routing stormwater runoff. The civil engineering team designed a new water feature to both manage the excess stormwater and serve as a centerpiece in the added greenspace. This dual-purpose feature is an example of practical sustainability in action.
Safety of clients and staff was thoroughly considered. Electronic security systems were installed at various entry points to maintain a secure buffer zone. All materials, furnishings, fixtures, and pieces of equipment were chosen to create a serene environment devoid of potentially harmful items.\
Guidon’s dedication to solution-based problem solving was a main driver behind the design of this project, creating a space where veterans can feel safe while getting the care they need.
