George Armstrong Custer's "Winners of the West": On the Battle of the Little Big Horn and Related Matters.
Edited by Mary Ann Thompson
Upton & Sons, 2007. Dust jacket. $85.00
Winners of the West was published monthly, and for a short time, bi-monthly from December 1923 through January 1944 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the heartland. Its main purpose was to organize the veterans of Indians wars into an association to fight for the pension concerns of the veterans and their widows. It, however, did much, much more. It gave voice to the soldiers who fought on the frontier-the men who made it safe for pioneers to build homes and lives in the West. The stories related in this newspaper include Indian wars before and after the Civil War, stories from Florida to California and every place in-between. Their shining stories that include George A. Custer and the Seventh U.S. Cavalry during their time in the West are the ones we are concerned with in this book.
